Volunteer of the Quarter: Matthew McMurray
Amid the excitement and chaos of Fleet Week New York 2024, one volunteer’s extraordinary dedication has captured the hearts of many. USO Volunteer, Matt McMurray, went above and beyond volunteering grueling 12 ½ hour days, totaling a remarkable 87.5 hours throughout the week.
From the start, Fleet Week presented a complex array of challenges for the USO team. Their mission was clear: to provide unwavering support and hospitality to the sea service members visiting New York City. As the USO’s Pop-Up Center was set up on the USS Bataan, Matt became an indispensable part of this effort.
Matt’s commitment began each morning well before sunrise. He arrived in Manhattan by 7:15 AM, ready to tackle the day’s tasks. His role involved a range of physically demanding responsibilities, including hauling 100 pounds of ice up a gangplank daily—a task he performed even on rainy days. His duties also encompassed setting up and breaking down the popup each day, among other strenuous tasks.
“Matt’s work ethic was nothing short of extraordinary,” said Josh Thomas, a USO team lead. “His dedication allowed us to manage other critical aspects of Fleet Week, knowing that he was ensuring everything ran smoothly.”
Matt’s role as a volunteer captain required him to provide steady support and continuity throughout the multiple volunteer shifts. His presence allowed other staff members to address additional Fleet Week tasks with confidence, knowing they could rely on Matt’s expertise and dedication.
“He truly exemplified our Mission First value,” said Area Operations Specialist, Janet Morse. “His willingness to take on challenging tasks and his positive attitude were instrumental in the success of our operations. The entire team deeply appreciated his hard work and cheerful demeanor.”
As Fleet Week concluded, the USO and the broader community expressed their gratitude to Matt for his remarkable volunteer work. His story serves as a testament to the power of dedicated service and the impact one individual can have on a larger mission.
Matt’s dedication during Fleet Week 2024 stands as a shining example of community spirit and selflessness. His hard work and commitment have not only supported the USO’s mission but also left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working alongside him. You can usually find Matt on Saturdays at the Fort Hamilton USO Center, where he just completed his 5th year of volunteering!
